Now it’s time for me to tell my own Santa story.

When I was in high school, every year at church we took a Saturday and watched everybody’s kids so their parents could go out and shop that day. One of the highlights was that Santa would come and we’d take pictures of all the kids with him for their parents.

Well, the last Santa visit of the day one year, I got drafted to play the big guy. I got the suit on and went in to greet the kids, sat down, and did the pictures. As I was leaving, some of the bigger kids realized it was me and tackled me and started to take the suit off of me.

I think they knew because my “Santa voice” sucked.

So, I’ve been Santa. And I was assaulted by 4th graders. Now you know.

I took the computer apart and debugged, thinking I found why it wouldn’t start and dreading what it would cost for me to fix it.

And then last night I hit the power button just for the hell of it and it started up just fine and has been working perfectly since.

I’m hoping that it was just some weird glitch, but who knows. I won’t be breathing easy for a while…

Twitter lists: Great idea, but useless so far

Yesterday, I became one of the five percent of Twitter users to get the new “lists” feature, which allows you to sort the people you follow into groups and view all their tweets separately fron the normal timeline.

Just one problem, though. As far as I’m concerned, the feature is useless.

You should just be able to check a box and, BAM, they’re added to that list. Well, it doesn’t work that way. A good portion of the time I’m having to check the box multiple times for it to take, if it will take at all

So, Twitter, please wait until a feature’s ready for prime time before you roll it out.

Yesterday morning I had an eye doctor’s appointment in Houston. When I got out, I decided to take a trek, with my camera, to the Houston Zoo to take some pictures.

It was a hell of a lot of fun, I’ve only really got one gripe about the whole experience and that was the weather. It was cloudy with a little rain and I would have much preferred sunny weather so the animals’ colors would have a little more pop, but oh well. The cloudiness does eliminate harsh shadows, though, so that’s a win.

Anyway, here’s a preview:

Twins over Tigers - Twins are 7-2 against Detroit in The Met, need I say more?

• ALDS:

Yankees over Twins - I think this one will go five games.
Angels over Red Sox - The Angels do us all a favor and save us from the hype of another Sox-Yanks ALCS.

• NLDS:

Cardinals over Dodgers - The Dodgers limped into the post-season, and they'll limp out. Cardinals sweep.
Rockies over Phillies - Rockies are hot, Phillies closer situation is a mess. Rox in 4.

• ALCS:

Angels over Yankees - They split the season series and Yankees have home field, but the Angels are playing for Adenhart (who they must have *really* liked) and I'm thinking that might be enough to push them over. Well, that and I hate the Yankees. I'm looking for this one to go six or seven.

• NLCS:

Rockies over Cardinals - Rockies went 6-1 against the Cards, including a four-game sweep at Busch. Rockies sew it up in five.

• World Series:

Angels over Rockies - This has the potential to be a good series. When the teams met in the regular season, the Angels took two of three in Anaheim. Angels gt it done in six, I think.

Of course, what I'd love to see is a Dodgers-Yankees series that ends with Joe Torre beating his former team. But that'll never happen.

A team of researchers from the US, Denmark and New Zealand have discovered a process through which a prevalent biogenic nonmethane hydrocarbon compound emitted by trees—isoprene—forms atmospheric particulate matter (i.e., secondary organic aerosol). The results are published in the 7 August issue of the journal Science.

Aerosols impact human health, due to their ability to penetrate deep into lungs, and impact Earth’s climate through the scattering and absorption of solar radiation and through serving as the nuclei on which clouds form, noted co-author Prof. John Seinfeld from Caltech. “So it is important to know where particles come from.”

I’d gone to the ranch with my mom to drop off Ashley, one of my mom’s dogs, with a stud Sheltie. I’d brought the Rebel with me and took some pictures of the horses while my mom did her thing.

Being a city kid, I didn’t have much experience with horses, and what little I have had was… shall we say… mixed. They’re big animals and I never know what to expect from them, so I was a little intimidated. The horses there were incredibly friendly, though,

Twister comes to Beaumont

Yes, you heard me right. We had a tornado roar through Beaumont yesterday afternoon.

I’m fine, the tornado was on the other side of town, probably a good 10 miles away.

Thankfully there were no major injuries, just some people with cuts and scrapes.

Closing the door: My take

As y’all will remember, on Monday I asked if you close the bathroom door when you’re the only one around. I got two more responses than I thought I would…

I’ve decided to share my take, this will also be a part of this new feature I’m playing with.

My answer: usually, but not always.

I mostly close the door out of a force of habit, but occasionally I won’t. Probably just out of sheer laziness.

Oh, and yes, big credit to Houston for giving us the priceless line “bombing porcelain harbor.” That line just reeks of WIN!

Random Thoughts: It’s like Twitter, but without that pesky 140 character limit!

Yes, I decided to do one of these. I figured I should post something substantial for once.

• Concerning all the well-dressed, swastika-wielding astroturfers at these town hall meetings. I should have listened to my better judgment when it said to leave the swastika in my car, but I do not regret wearing that tuxedo to the meeting! And, yea, I should have picked out a better toupee… it’s too obvious.
• Why do local advertisers always pick women with nasally or incredibly high-pitched voices to narrate their commercials. I swear, nails scratching a chalkboard would be better to hear than the women in their ads. At least they’re pretty. Maybe that’s why they’re picked.
• Met a girl, thought she was grand, fell in love, found out first hand… (NSFW/audio warning)
• So they DDoS-ed Twitter yesterday and it was down for a few hours. As a Twitter veteran who remembers the times when it was down seemingly more than it was up, I have this to say: Twitter downtime still sucks.
• My first experience with Twitter downtime was disheartening… it was right after I signed up. I’d thought I’d broken it. In fact, I did a blog post about it…
• Looking back and reading that post, I can’t help but think one thing. Damn, I had a lot of angry/bitter vibes going on. I really do try to not be so angry and bitter… now, at least.
• I wonder why I was so angry and bitter… hm…
• I’d go back and delete blog posts that are angry or bitter or whatever, but I’ve got a feeling that I’d end up deleting whole months. I know myself.

There was a cage set up in the reception at our vet’s office with a sign that said “free kittens.” Bruiser walked over to take a look, and as he extended his nose to give it a sniff, one tried to claw him.
